What is the Park Ambassadors Volunteer Program?
The Park Ambassadors Volunteer Program was founded more than 20 years ago as a way to keep Bettendorf parks safe and beautiful for all to enjoy. This group of volunteer citizens patrol the City's parks serving as an extra set of eyes and ears for the Bettendorf Police Department and the Parks Maintenance Division. As the volunteers visit the parks, they will observe and report findings that need to be brought to the attention of the City for maintenance or safety concerns. Park Ambassadors act as “Good Will Ambassadors” for the City of Bettendorf.
Ambassadors must be over the age of 18 and are not required to reside in Bettendorf. High school students ages 16 and older who are looking to earn service hours are welcome to volunteer with a parent or guardian. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and pass a criminal background check. Park Ambassadors are typically sent out in pairs. You may pair up with a family member or friend, or the coordinator will pair you up with another Ambassador. Each Ambassador usually volunteers 2 or 3 nights per month, and on nights that work for their schedule. Park Ambassadors patrol in the evenings from Memorial Day until Labor Day. The Parks & Recreation Department supplies each volunteer with a hat and shirt so that they may be easily identified, as well as a City vehicle in which to patrol the parks.
An orientation for Park Ambassadors is held in May, at which rules, regulations, and procedures will be discussed.
