Planning & Development Services
As part of the Planning and Development Services Department, the Arborist helps balance responsible growth with the preservation of Winder’s natural beauty, supporting a more sustainable community for everyone. In this capacity, the Arborist is responsible for:
- Recommending tree ordinances
- Reviewing development site plans
- Working closely with builders, engineers, and city staff to ensure projects meet city standards
- Completing pre-construction meetings and post-construction site inspections
Public Works
The Arborist works closely with the Public Works Department to support the ongoing management of public trees throughout Winder. Together, they strive to address issues quickly and maintain a safe, attractive, and well-managed urban forest for the community. The Arborist is responsible for:
- Responding to residents’ concerns about public trees
- Completing Tree Risk Assessments
- Providing risk mitigation options and recommendations
- Technical assistance with tree health care and management including pruning, planting, and removals of public trees.
Community Engagement
Beyond technical responsibilities, the Arborist plays an important role in connecting with the community and helping guide the future of the city’s urban forest. Through outreach, education, and long-term planning, the Arborist works to build awareness, encourage public involvement, and promote sustainable practices that support a healthy and resilient tree canopy. This includes:
- Speaking at local schools
- Participating in community events like Arbor Day
- Sharing practical guidance on topics related to tree health and selection
- Maintaining Tree City USA status
- Applying for grants to fund tree related initiatives and projects
