ABOUT THE (AWARD-WINNING) PROGRAM
‘We’re Not Scared! We’re Prepared!’ is a Youth Emergency Preparedness program that engages Yuba County first-grade students with the task of developing and promoting disaster preparedness for their home, school, and local community. The idea is to enlist first graders to prepare and pack a “Go Bag” and to emotionally develop a mindset of “We’re not Scared! We’re Prepared!.. Whooo’s Prepared? YOU!” This is accomplished in a way that allows students to share their feelings and ideas about staying safe during a disaster while receiving advice from the Yuba County Office of Emergency Services. Reflecting on these behaviors can contribute to a person staying safe during these disaster events.
The wrap-up task for students is to compare items placed on a table and to recognize what appropriate items should be included in a “Go Bag.” Ultimately, the goal is for each student to bring home our message, “We’re Not Scared! We’re Prepared!” and share it with their family on what they have learned- building upon our county’s message that the parents are already familiar with: Be Prepared Yuba.

Letter to Parents/Guardians of Participating Students: “Today in class, your child had an awesome time learning all about our Youth Emergency Preparedness Program, “We’re Not Scared! We’re Prepared!” They met our lovable mascot, Yuba the Owl, and learned how to recognize their emotions during a disaster. They also explored what they could do to prepare for emergencies and how to pack a go-bag! Be sure to ask them about the coolest thing they learned today!” View full poster

TEACHING MATERIALS
"Emotions: What do you see?" Presentation: Each lesson starts with an interactive presentation about the emotions students may experience during a disaster or emergency. Students are shown various photos of people during disasters and are asked to identify what emotions those individuals are feeling. The goal is for students to understand that experiencing a range of emotions during a disaster is normal and that being prepared can have a positive impact on how they feel. View presentation slides
ENDORSEMENTS
"I wanted to thank you for sharing your Youth Emergency Preparedness Program with my class. They really enjoyed your presentation and loved getting to take home the bag of fun stuff (go bag). It also gave their parents the opportunity to ask them why they got the bag and what it was about. When we had the earthquake warning the other day, they were not sure if it was a drill or a real earthquake. One of the students said they were scared and a few others said "We're not scared! We're prepared!" They definitely got the message. I would love for you to come again next year." - Shanon Bennett, Cordua Elementary School Teacher
"Thank you so much for coming out and teaching my first grade class about emergencies and preparedness. The whole group activities made it memorable for everybody. We still use the slogan "We're not scared. We're prepared!" and the mindset for students during unexpected things at school since the presentation (fire alarms and soft lockdown) is a lot more calmer. All of the students appreciated the emergency bags with supplies in them. Thank you for being a part of our first grade year!" - Rachel Colon Bartholomew, Johnson Park Elementary School Teacher
Thank you for coming to Wheatland Elementary School's first grade to teach them "We're Not Scared! We're Prepared!" The educator was very enthusiastic and engaged my students well. It is a hard topic to teach about possible emergencies and not scare children this age, but she did amazing presenting it in an interactive manner and letting them participate in the learning process. My students were excited to take their preparedness bags home and share what they learned with their families." - Heather McCourtie, Wheatland Elementary School Teacher
"Thank you for coming out and presenting to the 1st graders. The kids loved it! You were interacting with them the whole time. They were eager to ask questions. The presentation was awesome! I don't know how you can improve it. 10/10. Now they will feel prepared in case of an emergency. Thank you!" - Jasmin Topete, Ella Elementary Community School Coordinator
“We are always thankful for visitors that give us more knowledge. Looking forward to the next one!” - Erin Fishetti, Browns Valley Elementary School and Cordua Elementary School Principal
“The classes really enjoyed it!” - Patrick Brose, Camptonville Principal
