The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was signed into law by President George W. Bush in September of 2003. PREA aims to reduce and prevent sexual assaults in correctional facilities through the establishment of a “zero-tolerance” policy and the development of national standards in incarceration.
The National Prison Rape Elimination Commission developed these standards, which were reviewed by the Department of Justice and passed as the finale rule in August 2, 2012.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department (YCSO) is committed to upholding the law, and providing the safest environment possible for inmates housed at its facilities. YCSO maintains a Zero Tolerance Policy toward sexual abuse and sexual harassment of any kind. Inmates who are victims of sexual harassment or sexual assault are encouraged to immediately report the behavior to any staff member or through confidential mail to our local victim advocate Erich Runge (Yuba County Probation Victim Witness
Assistance Officer) at 209 6th st, Marysville, CA. 95901 530-741-6275. Friends or family members who become aware of sexual abuse within our facilities may also report on an inmate’s behalf. Per department policy, YCSO shall ensure that an administrative or criminal investigation (whichever is appropriate) is completed for all allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
